A Face Lift or Rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure used to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the face. This procedure can correct deep creases that may form between the nose and mouth, a sagging jaw line, or folds around the neck. This is done by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS.
A facelift can improve many areas of the face. Facelifts can last for ten years or more and make you appear ten to fifteen years younger. Facelifts are most appropriate for sagging skin in the midface and/or jawline. Also for deep creases extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth called nasolabial folds. The lines extending from each corner of your mouth down to your chin called marionette lines can also be corrected. Facelifts help facial fat that has fallen or is displaced, sagging and loss of muscle tone in the lower face resulting in jowls, a double chin resulting from loose skin and excess fat deposits under the chin and jaw, and creased and sagging skin in your neck.
Regardless of the type of facelift you undergo, you will have incisions that involve the skin around your ear. Facelift scars can be virtually invisible: narrow, flat, and well placed behind the ear so you can wear your hair close-cropped. Dr. Stroup will place the incision in areas that are hidden and in areas where the scars look like natural wrinkles. Incision healing depends on surgical technique, infection prevention, reduction of tension, your nutrition, any known or unknown underlying medical conditions, no smoking, and your genetic tendencies. The best facelift candidates must have realistic expectations and are willing and able to follow all pre and post operative instructions provided by their plastic surgeons. After the consultation, the doctor can advise a patient as to whether he or she is a good candidate for a facelift and whether or not an alternate procedure might be preferable. Ideal candidates for facelift surgery share certain important traits. Skin elasticity is important because skin retains some of its natural suppleness and flexibility. This is important because, during the procedure, the surgeon tightens the facial skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Successful healing with optimal results depends on having skin that is able to conform to its new, improved contours. A strong bone structure is important to provide support and contribute to satisfying results. Facelift candidates typically want to remove excess skin from the face or neck, tightening skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles simultaneously.
During your facelift recovery, a bandage will be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising once your procedure is completed. Thin tubes may be present to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect under the skin. You will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site and drains, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon.
