What’s involved in getting a Face Lift? Would I be a good candidate? And if so, what are the risks?

A Face Lift or Rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure used to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the face. This procedure can correct deep creases that may form between the nose and mouth, a sagging jaw line, or folds around the neck. This is done by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS.

A facelift can improve many areas of the face. Facelifts can last for ten years or more and make you appear ten to fifteen years younger. Facelifts are most appropriate for sagging skin in the midface and/or jawline. Also for deep creases extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth called nasolabial folds. The lines extending from each corner of your mouth down to your chin called marionette lines can also be corrected. Facelifts help facial fat that has fallen or is displaced, sagging and loss of muscle tone in the lower face resulting in jowls, a double chin resulting from loose skin and excess fat deposits under the chin and jaw, and creased and sagging skin in your neck.

Regardless of the type of facelift you undergo, you will have incisions that involve the skin around your ear. Facelift scars can be virtually invisible: narrow, flat, and well placed behind the ear so you can wear your hair close-cropped. Dr. Stroup will place the incision in areas that are hidden and in areas where the scars look like natural wrinkles. Incision healing depends on surgical technique, infection prevention, reduction of tension, your nutrition, any known or unknown underlying medical conditions, no smoking, and your genetic tendencies. The best facelift candidates must have realistic expectations and are willing and able to follow all pre and post operative instructions provided by their plastic surgeons. After the consultation, the doctor can advise a patient as to whether he or she is a good candidate for a facelift and whether or not an alternate procedure might be preferable. Ideal candidates for facelift surgery share certain important traits. Skin elasticity is important because skin retains some of its natural suppleness and flexibility. This is important because, during the procedure, the surgeon tightens the facial skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Successful healing with optimal results depends on having skin that is able to conform to its new, improved contours. A strong bone structure is important to provide support and contribute to satisfying results. Facelift candidates typically want to remove excess skin from the face or neck, tightening skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles simultaneously.

During your facelift recovery, a bandage will be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising once your procedure is completed. Thin tubes may be present to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect under the skin. You will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site and drains, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon.

Can Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery do my Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

Yes. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS offers abdominoplasty, otherwise known as a tummy tuck.  A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.  This procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of a protruding abdomen.

The best candidates for a tummy tuck are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.  Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved.  If you feel that you desire to have a flatter abdomen and desire to look more attractive in your slacks and form-fitting clothes then a Tummy Tuck may be the procedure for you.

The Ideal Candidates for a tummy tuck are:

  • Patients seeking abdominal wall contouring who are not good candidates for liposuction.
  • Patients with sagging loose abdominal skin.
  • Patients with weakened, stretched abdominal wall muscles subsequent to pregnancy.
  • Patients in good general health who are non-smokers.
  • Patients who have had dramatic weight loss and resultant loose skin.
  • Patients with realistic expectations.

Complete tummy tuck surgery usually takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of work required. Partial tummy tucks, or a mini-abdominoplasty, may take an hour or two.  Most commonly, Dr. Stroup will make an incision low along the lower abdominal crease just above the pubic area. With a mini tummy tuck, the incision is shorter and the belly button is not moved, however, excess skin above the belly button is not tightened.

The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin is removed. A new hole is cut for the belly button, which is then stitched in place.  Finally, the incision will be carefully closed in multiple layers to minimize scar formation, dressing will be applied, and a temporary drainage tube will be inserted to remove excess fluid from the surgical site.  The type of anesthesia used for tummy tucks is a general anesthesia.

The scar usually takes six to twelve months before the final appearance. The good news is that the primary scar is easy to hide under all types of underwear and most one and two piece bathing suits.

Tummy tucks can get rid of some stretch marks depending on their location. All stretch marks and scars below the belly button will be completely removed after surgery. Any stretch marks located above the belly button will be transferred to a much lower position on the abdomen.

A return to light, non-strenuous work is permitted usually within two weeks following tummy tuck surgery. In six to eight weeks, patients may return to aerobic workouts and weight lifting. More moderate forms of exercise, such as walking, low intensity treadmill and elliptical exercise are permitted earlier.

All sutures are dissolvable and under the skin. You will have small tapes on the skin incisions. You should expect some bruising and swelling after surgery, but this will subside over time.

Unfortunately, you can expect to experience some pain after the surgery as well. Take your pain medication as recommended. Your abdominal skin may be numb at first, but you will typically regain more sensation over the next few months.

Does Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery Offer Liposuction?

Yes. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS offers three different types of Liposuction. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery offers SAL (suction assisted liposuction), UAL (ultrasonic assisted liposuction), and SmartLipo which is (laser assisted liposuction).

Dieting and exercise can slim and tone your body but there still may be some areas that are resistant to all of your hard work. Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas in the body. Liposuction is not an alternative to a healthy diet and exercise routine and this will need to be maintained after the procedure to maintain your results. The best candidates are those who are at their normal weight and have certain areas resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that usually lasts from one to three hours depending on the amount of fat to be removed. The area is marked prior to the procedure. A small incision is made to allow the insertion of a hollow tube called a cannula. The other end is connected to a device which sucks out the fat.

Ultrasound-Assisted liposuction is a technique that utilizes sound waves to break up fat deposits. A special cannula is used which connects to an ultrasonic generator. As the cannula is passed through the tissues, fat cells are ruptured, releasing their contents. The liquefied fatty emulsion is then removed. UAL improves the ease and effectiveness of liposuction in fibrous areas of the body. You will be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. The swelling usually lasts about six weeks.

Smartlipo is a minimally invasive, laser-assisted liposuction procedure that targets trouble spots like the abdomen, thighs and neck. This permanent eliminates fat. The love handles, bat wings, muffin tops, saddlebags, and jowls that don’t response to diet and exercise can be treated with laser assisted liposuction in the office with a local anesthetic. This means you don’t have to worry about going under anesthesia and you can avoid the costly charges of the operating room. Laser assisted liposuction can dramatically make a difference with minimal downtime and less pain than traditional liposuction. Smartlipo actually tightens the skin through coagulation so you don’t have to worry about dimpling and sagging. Laser assisted liposuction only involves a tiny incision about the size of the tip of a pen. It is inserted through a very small tube into your body. The laser then ruptures the fat cell membranes and these fat cells are destroyed permanently. The liquefied fat is gently suctioned out. New collagen is produced resulting in coagulation of skin, resulting in tightening. Typically only one treatment is required depending on the number of areas to be treated. Results may vary but can usually been seen within a week with continued improvement over the next three to six months.

Does Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery Offer Botox Injections?

Yes. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS offers Botox Injections.

These Botox injections are done in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wrinkles result from a combination of many factors.  It’s not just about cellular changes, collagen depletion, or damage caused by free radicals.  When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. And when you squint, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet.  Botox works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet to form over time.

Injecting Botox into the muscles that cause frown lines and crow’s feet lines will temporarily reduce the activity of those muscles.  The result is a reduction in the appearance of those lines.

Botox works by relaxing the muscle which allows the overlying skin to remain smooth and unwrinkled.  Botox is injected with a very fine need.  The treatment is effective, safe, and takes approximately ten minutes.  The pain is minimal, like a pin prick, and no anesthetic is required.

The effect of Botox usually last three to four months and will fade away gradually.  Following several Botox treatments, the results may last four to eight months, or longer.  Botox offers extended relief over the course of long-term treatment.

Typically, the effect of Botox is visible within three days.  Maximum benefits are reached between ten to fourteen days.  Once the muscle relaxes and the skin softens, you will have a more relaxed and youthful appearance.

The world of Botox has gotten bigger recently as more men are rejecting its characterization as feminine and opting to receive the treatment.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than six million men had Botox treatments last year.

Does Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery Do Permanent Makeup?

Yes. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS offers Permanent Makeup. Permanent makeup is designed to be just that … permanent.

We currently offer Eyeliner, Eyebrows, & Lip Color. For the patient desiring eyeliner, a fine, soft natural line can be created to add depth and definition to the eye and to make lashes appear thicker. The starting and ending point, color and thickness are a matter of individual preference. Many of our patients select a natural look that still allows them to occasionally apply other liner colors over the permanent line.

For the patient desiring permanent eyebrow makeup, the shape of your brows determined your natural expression. Permanent brow makeup is an ideal salutation for women whose brows are sparse, uneven, or too short or for those whose brows are very light in color, or who suffer from female pattern baldness.

Lip color can be added as a natural shade or a more dramatic blend of color to enhance your face and brighten your complexion with a look that lasts all day, every day. Lip liner and lip color are the perfect solution to reshape uneven lips, for making the lips appear larger and fuller, and for covering scars. There is also the added benefit of preventing lipstick from bleeding.

Does Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery Accept Monthly Payments?

Yes. Advanced Concepts in Plastic Surgery located in South Euclid, Ohio at 1611 South Green Road, Suite 238, South Euclid, Ohio, 44121, US under Dr. Robert T. Stroup, M.D., FACS does indeed accept monthly payments. We believe that cosmetic surgery is an excellent investment in an individual’s well being, and because of this we believe that financial considerations should not be an obstacle to obtaining your procedure. Being sensitive to the fact that different patients have different needs, we provide a Monthly Payment Option through Care Credit, which is a flexible monthly payment option specifically, designed for cosmetic surgery, with some payment plans offering 0% interest. You can apply online at http://carecredit.com/ or over the phone by calling (800) 677-0718.

Other ways to pay are cash, check, American Express, VISA, Discover or MasterCard.  We do accept payments to our office in Cleveland directly but the procedure must be paid in full two weeks prior to surgery.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is now being seen as an investment. Cosmetic plastic surgery may have once been seen as a medical procedure just for women or people with a higher-than-average income, but advances in the field have opened opportunities to various individuals. The people getting plastic surgery aren’t doing so simply for cosmetic reasons either. It appears that some people see plastic surgery as a way to improve their odds of getting a job. Businessmen are using noninvasive procedures such as BOTOX injections or dermal injectable fillers to help them stay ahead in their field. They favor these treatments because they are quick, inexpensive and can possibly help them edge out competition from younger candidates. Whether or not professionals will admit it, appearance makes a big difference in competitive markets. Men who have deep wrinkles or creases around their eyes or mouth may be discriminated against, particularly if they are up for a job position for which they will be competing against people in their 20s or 30s.
